Get Off the Browser

The 90 seconds that unlocked my whole AI journey. If you only ever read one thing I write about AI, read this one.

Get Off the Browser

For the longest time, I felt locked out.

I saw all these TikTok videos where people were doing amazing coding stuff with AI, and I had no idea what was going on. I would talk to it. I would type stuff out. I would try things. And everyone kept talking about code.

At the time I was using ChatGPT. And whether you use ChatGPT or Claude, each one has its own coding platform. But here is the problem: those don’t live in the browser. And I was stuck in the browser.

I would go to ChatGPT.com or Claude.com, chat back and forth on my account, and nothing was ever happening. I could never find the buttons they were talking about. I felt completely lost.

If any of that sounds familiar, this post is for you, because what happened next unlocked my whole AI journey. And it takes two minutes.

The unlock

I downloaded the desktop app.

That is it. That is the whole secret. Not a better prompt, not a paid course, not a technical background. When you download the desktop app, it unlocks the whole world.

The padlock bursting open

Eight months later, I still think about this every day, because people are still stuck in the chat. Still stuck in the browser. And the gap between those two groups is getting wider every week.

Why the app changes everything

Here is the plain difference.

The browser version of AI is a helpful stranger. It can talk with you. It is genuinely smart. But it holds nothing, connects nothing, and touches nothing. Every conversation starts from zero, and everything it suggests, you still have to go do yourself.

The app version of AI is a coworker at your computer. It can read your files. It can use your programs. It can build things and hand them back to you finished. Every single thing I have shared from my AI journey, the grocery cart app, the second brain, the news scraper, the inbox agent, the RFP machine I built for my mom, every one of them exists because the AI was on my computer instead of in a tab.

The three parts (my favorite is Claude)

When you open the Claude app, there are three parts:

  1. Chat. The part almost everyone knows. Ask questions, get answers. This is where most people stop, and it is the smallest part of the story.

  2. Cowork. A great tool, and the easiest way I can describe it is this: it is almost like handing AI your computer. Point it at a folder, give it a chore, and it works while you watch.

  3. Code. And that is where my journey really began. Despite the name, you do not write code here. You describe what you want in plain English, and it builds it. This is where the grocery cart happened.

The door opening

Do it today

  1. Go to claude.com, or chatgpt.com if that is your side of the fence.
  2. Download the app for Mac or for Windows, whatever computer you have.
  3. Sign in with the same account you already use. Same account, new powers.
  4. Give it one real chore tonight. Something small and annoying from your actual life. Then watch what happens.

I made a short video version of this story, and it is the first thing I point anyone to: watch it on YouTube. There is also a free step-by-step guide in my guides library if you want it in writing with pictures.

Join the fun

If you are still in the browser, I am begging you now like I begged you in the video: download the app and join the fun.

You’re not behind. You are one download away from the version of AI everyone is actually talking about.

Tell me in the comments or replies what you build first. I read every one, and I will tell you where I’d start.

This is the origin story behind Cool Shit I Built With AI. Every episode in the series happened because of this one move. The videos are on Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube at @danielonpurpose.
